Yankees Win Third Game in 24-Hour Span, Four Straight

Yankees 2 VS Orioles 1

A win is a win. That is the main takeaway of this game. It wasn’t pretty, but every win is important drawing near the end of the season. After beating up on the O’s in a double header yesterday, the Yankees took this one in extras. Jordan Montgomery looked every bit the high potential lefty pitcher they were anticipating at the beginning of the season, racking up a career high nine strikeouts. It seemed every batter he faced was swinging and missing in this one, and if he can keep this up, he’ll be an important piece of the Yankees rotation catapulting them into the playoffs. This start was necessary for him as he was roughed up by the Blue Jays not too long ago.

The Savages were not very savage on offense or defense today, but they made contact when they had to and got some important sacrifice flies leading to this win. Luke Voit, who has been the Yankees’ undisputed MVP this season, played hero in the 10th with a game-winning productive out. However, it was his sacrifice fly in the first advancing LeMahieu to third that led to the first run, which got the Bronx boys on the board. Clint Frazier continues to prove that he deserves to be in the everyday lineup as he drove in that run. He’s been playing hard, hustling on the bases and on defense since he got his opportunity this year. Every hit LeMahieu gets just reminds me how much more expensive he’s going to be to extend. He scored both Yankees runs today, and the front office likely missed their opportunity to keep him in pinstripes on a team friendly deal. He’s accepted less money to be in New York once, but I’m not sure that will happen again now that he’s proven himself further.

Fans can breathe a sigh of relief as the bullpen came on and did their job in a close game, which hasn’t been the case over the past three weeks. This is a great sign, and it’s nice to see this team playing the way we’re accustomed to. With today’s win, some distance has been created from the Orioles, and we have the Blue Jays in our sights for a better seed come playoff games.
